Fence Contractor in Kingston and Wimbledon

Oilcanfinish specialise in the installation of bespoke modern slat fencing, traditional featheredge fencing with arris rails, and Jackson’s fence panels. We can also install Closeboard and Overlap Fence Panels, and decorative fence panels including Hit and Miss fencing panels. We use Use Class 4 Timber Posts or Supreme Concrete Posts and Gravel Boards providing your property with privacy and security. We can also install your Garden Gate and Gate Frame at the same time.

There are numerous fence panels and posts to choose from when planning your fence. Any DIY Store will be able to sell you entry level panels. We do not install these. The main reason is these budget fence panels life expentancy is 5-8 years maximum because of how they were made, this is why they are the lowest priced products in the market. The type of wood used in entry level fence panels is fast grown timber and is filled with knots, the lower quality of nails used leads to rust marks and lines, the quality of construction means perfectly square corners and joints have not been made, and the treatment process of these fence panels is often dip treated versus pressure treated. All of these factors mean budget fence panels are below our standards and we can not recommend them to our clients. Our entry level fence panel is planed smooth and comes with a 25 year guarantee, and is only slightly more expensive.

As a family friendly business we need our fences and posts to be planed and sanded smooth to protect kids hands from slivers and cuts. We use rounded or chamfered edges on our posts and timber making them visually more attractive. Wherever possible we try to avoid using rough and sharp edged concrete posts for the same reason.

Slat Screen Fencing

We design and build custom fencing with Slat Rails, either as Fence Panel Sections or attached directly to Timber Posts. Our recommendation for these slat fences is Canadian Western Red Cedar slats, primarily due to Cedar’s natural resistances to fungus, wood boring insects, and rot.

Other less expensive options include Redwood Slats or pre-made Fence Panels designed as Slat Panels for ease of installation.

Canadian Western Red Cedar has a slight variance in colour between the slats providing a natural look combined in a modern style.

35-40 Year Life Expectancy for Cedar if treated regularly.

Slats are generally 20mm thick and come in widths of 38, 45, 70, 95 and 145mm and can be built to any height.

Featheredge Fencing

We install Featheredge Board Fencing with Arris and Cap Rails with either Timber or Concrete Fence Posts for a traditional look.

The horizontal arris rails can be fitted into Timber or Concrete Mortise Posts using traditional mortise methods or using galvanised brackets into square timber posts.

Featheredge Fencing can be built in any section length up to a width of 3mt between fence posts and to any height.

Fence Staining and Painting

All Fence Panels can be Sealed, Stained, or Painted to achieve your desired look. Staining and Painting not only enhances the appearance of your fence, it also protects your fence and extend the life of your investment.

For fence painting we recommend prime your fence first. Our recommendation for exterior wood primers is Zinnser Bullseye 123 (water based) or Zinnser Coverstain (oil based). Once your fence is primed, use an exterior grade wood paint such as Zinnser Allcoat or an opaque wood stain such as Dulux Trade Ultimate Opaque or Sadolin Superdec.

For fence staining there are numerous options, our preferences are oil based products which offer both UV Resistance and Protection from Wood Decay. Osmo and Owatrol would be our first choices for wood stain. For a more cost effective UV Resistant Treatment, use Barrettines Wood Protective Treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions on Fencing

Should I get Timber or Concrete Fence Posts?

There is not a large variance in price between 100mm x 100mm Timber Posts and Supreme Concrete Slotted Posts. The main difference is the cost of Concrete Corner Posts, which are more expensive and require two people to move as they weigh in excess of 85kgs.

Will my timber posts rot?

Unfortunately the answer is yes. Timber Posts, even those treated to Use Class 4, will rot as they will be in contact with the ground and moisture. You can prolong their life by regularly treating them with anti-rot wood treatments. There are some good installation techniques which can extend the life of your timber fence posts however it does also depend on plants growing near them and earth building up near the base of the post.

If you use hardwood fence posts these will last significantly longer before they rot, however they cost significantly more as well.

How long do fence posts last?

Concrete Posts will not rot, and will have a service life in excess of 25 years. Concrete Posts have long galvanised steel reinforcement bars inside them. If Concrete Posts get chipped, the steel bars get exposed to moisture and over time will start to rust, however this is a slow process. Concrete Posts should last closer to 40 years. Timber Posts treated to Use Class 4 generally last between 10-15  years depending on how much moisture, earth, and plants are in contact with them. The treating processes for wood are improving rapidly and some post retailers offer guarantees of 15 years. Jackson’s Fence Posts will last longer than most other brands.

Can my broken/rotten fence posts be repaired?

Yes, broken or rotten fence posts can be repaired using Concrete Repair Spurs cemented into the ground beside the fence post. The Post is then bolted onto the Concrete Repair Spur. Alternately they can be replaced.

Should I get Gravel Boards?

Yes. Gravel Boards extend the usable life of your fence panels significantly. Gravel Boards lift the fence panels off the ground, allowing the panels to fully dry after they get wet. Any wood which is in direct contact with the ground will rot over time, regardless of how it has been pressure treated. This means even wooden gravel boards will also rot eventually.  Concrete Gravel Boards will not rot. We have removed concrete gravel boards which are 20 years old and are still in perfect condition.
