These types of projects are hugely rewarding on completion. The old balcony was falling off the wall, the staircase Ballustrades were swinging in and out, and the posts were completely rotten at ground level. How it was still standing at all is beyond me.
The client required a full replacement. New balcony, new support structure, new staircase which had a total rise of 2.5mt, and new Ballustrades.
We have done numerous projects like this and have a set method of installing balconies from the ground up.
Balcony Support Structure
First we did poured new concrete footings for the support posts, these were strengthened with rebar to ensure they don’t break apart over time.
On top of these footings we install 150x150mm posts, elevated off the concrete footing with Simpsons Strong Tie ABW66RZ post shoes. At the top of the posts we use two 50x150mm Bearers. We then add cross braces to remove lateral movement.We can also upgrade these posts to 150x150mm Aluminium Posts if a more modern look is requested.
Next we built out upper platform deck.
We raised it slightly from the old deck. This was to maximise the space and remove the need for a step immediately outside the doors for two reasons:
- Steps immediately in front of doors are dangerous and unexpected creating a trip hazard
- The usable space on the upper balcony was reduced by having a step.Now the Balcony is almost the identical height to the interior making it far more consistent with the indoors and outdoors living spaces seamless.
Next we added our staircase. This also has 4 of its own posts to prevent any movement. The staircase has compliant slope and step height and tread lengths making it safer for everyone who uses it.
Lastly we added our Balustrades. We always recommend Aluminium Balustrades as they are far superior in terms of durability. Any scratches can easily be touched up with automotive paint (available online in small touch up pen formats).
